The Canadian Assessment of Physical Literacy First Edition (CAPL-1) has been under development since 2007 and has been repeatedly refined since then. Through 2014-2016, eleven sites (Charlottetown, Antigonish, Halifax, Trois Rivières, Ottawa, North Bay, Windsor, Winnipeg, Lethbridge, Calgary, Victoria) across Canada collaborated to collect data on a large sample of Canadian children aged 8-12 years using the CAPL-1.
Data on 10,000+ Canadian children allow for the first comprehensive assessment of the overall physical literacy of Canadian children and its component domains (physical competence, knowledge and understanding, physical activity/daily behaviours, motivation and confidence).
Factor analyses on this large dataset were subsequently completed and helped inform further revisions to the CAPL and the development of a new and improved CAPL Second Edition (CAPL-2). The CAPL-2 website was officially launched at the 50th Anniversary Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology Annual Conference in Winnipeg on Friday, October 27th and includes a complete re-design along with updated manuals and training videos.
